Chat - Instructors
| Online Learning Module |
Chats are similar to Discussions Boards, but responses are instantaneous and discussion may be fast-paced. Spelling and grammar are not as important in chat rooms as they are in Discussion Boards because the goal is to establish a free flow of exchange. IMPORTANT: for chats to work properly, you need to make sure you are in the View mode by clicking on the View tab.
- Click on the Chats link on the Course Menu or click on the Chats link on the Homepage.
- This screen with two links appears:
- Chat Rooms will bring you to the list of Chat Rooms.
- Chat Transcripts will bring you to the course chat logs.
- By clicking on Chat Rooms (if a security warning pops up, click on the Yes button), six different rooms will appear:
- Click here for Weekly Chat is the room where the students will enter on the night of chat. Students should enter the room 10-15 minutes prior to the start of chat to make sure everything works. The Chat Transcripts records this room. The professor should warn students to be aware of this.
- Rooms 2-4 are breakout rooms for small group discussions. These rooms are also recorded.
- General Chat for <Course Name> is a general chat for students to use outside of the weekly chat.
- General Chat for All Courses is a global room that is accessible to every student at CSP that has a WebCT account. This room and General Chat for <Course Name> are NOT recorded.
- Click on a room. It may take a few moments to load. Then, click on the top-middle box in the upper-right of the window to maximize the chat window. The chat rooms look like the following and have several components:
- The Output Interaction Box is where all the chat activity is displayed.
- Enter your message below is where the user may type a message and press <Enter>. Faculty should type in ALL CAPS so it will be able to stand out from the rest of the chat group.
- Users Logged On displays all the participants in the chat room in the order that they logged in.
- The Entry Chime is an optional feature that, when checked, will play a sound when someone logs on. Therefore, if a user leaves the chat room, a chime will sound when they log back on.
- Send URL is a feature where the user can type in a web address (http://www.csp.edu) and it will send the address in the form of a hyperlink to all other users in the room.
- Quit will exit the user from the room.

Chat Transcripts
The Chat Transcripts link from the main Chats page will show a chronological list of all chats that have taken place within the Click here for Weekly Chat link. As new chats are completed within this room, the dialogue is appended to the bottom of the previous dialogue within the same transcript.
