Chat - Students

Online Learning Module

GETTING STARTED

Chats are similar to Discussions Boards except responses are instantaneous and fast-paced. Spelling and grammar are not as important in chat rooms as they are in Discussion Boards because you are trying to establish a free flow of exchange. The chat rooms can be used as virtual classroom environments. To access the chat rooms:

  1. Click on the Chats link on the Course Menu or click on the Chats link on the Homepage.
  2. You will see the following screen with two links:
    • Chat Rooms will bring you to the list of Chat Rooms.
    • Chat Transcripts will bring you to the course chat logs (see below).

  3. By clicking on Chat Rooms (if a security warning pops up, click on the Yes button), you will see six different rooms:
    • Click here for Weekly Chat is the room where everybody will enter on the night of chat. People should enter the room 10-15 minutes prior to the start of chat to make sure everything works. The Chat Transcripts records this room, so be aware of what you are typing.
    • Rooms 2-4 are breakout rooms for small group discussions. These rooms are also recorded.
    • General Chat for <Course Name> is a general chat for students to use outside of the weekly chat.
    • General Chat for All Courses is a global room that is accessible to every student at CSP that has a WebCT account. This room and General Chat for <Course Name> are NOT recorded.

USING CHAT

  2. Once you have accessed the chat room, you may click on the top middle box to maximize the chat window.

  3. Type a message in the Enter your message below field and press <Enter> to post it to the room.
  4. Your instructor may type in all capital letters in order to distinguish their dialogue from the students.
  5. Many instructors will ask questions that they expect you to response quickly with an “*” as a readiness indicator. For example, the instructor may state “Are you ready to move on to the next question *” Your response would simply be to type “*” if you are ready.
  6. When you are finished chatting, you must click on the QUIT button to end the session (do not just close the window).
  7. For more information about chats click on Help, while at the Chat Menu.

CHAT TRANSCRIPTS

The Chat Transcripts link from the main Chats page will show a chronological list of all chats that have taken place within that course. You can copy and paste this transcript into Microsoft Word so you can read it off line.
