Check Disk

Check Disk is a utility provided within the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System. Check Disk scans your hard drive for errors and corruptions. It then does its best to repair these errors. It will also scan for damaged parts of the hard drive and attempt to move data to a safe part of the drive. The Check Disk process is essential to maintain a stable operating system. It is recommended by the Help Desk that you run Check Disk on your computer at least every year.

How to Run Check Disk

  1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click Local Disk(C:).
  2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
  4. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed, Use one of the following procedures:

Fast Check Only

This scan detects errors and does not repair them. Useful for a fast check of drive integrity.

  1. Click Start.

Fast Check and Repair

This scan detect errors and repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors. It takes more time than the previous option, but less time than a thorough scan.

  1. Select the Automatically fix file system errors check box
  2. Click Start.

Thorough Check and Repair

This scan repairs errors, locates bad sectors, and recovers readable information. It requires a reboot in order to run and may take several hours to complete.

  1. Select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then
  2. Click Start.
  3. Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Note: If one or more of the files on the drive are open or in use, you will receive the following message: The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer? You should click Yes and check disk will run next time the computer is started.
