Compiling Discussion Boards Threads
The methods below will allow you to review Discussion Board threads while offline by copying and pasting them in Microsoft Word. Not only will the Discussion boards print correctly in Word, but it also gives the ability to review postings while you are not connected to the Internet. This means, if using a laptop, threads can be reviewed anywhere without being connected to a network. Also, if using a dial-up connection, the telephone line is not tied up. Finally, since the Discussion Board threads are saved in Word, it saves paper and threads do not have to be printed out at all!
First Method
- Within the WebCT course, click on the Discussion Board icon.
- Click on the appropriate week.
- Click on the View Thread icon for the thread that you wish to print. The View Thread icon looks like a magnifying glass.
- A new window with all of the posts from the thread should open.
- Go to Edit, Select All.
- Go to Edit, Copy.
- Open Microsoft Word. Go to Edit, Paste.
- If you wish to print, go to File, Print.
This way is quick and effective, and is more ideal if you are working within the window that appears after you click on the "View Thread" icon and want to respond from there. After you copy and paste that text into Word, it is not possible to respond to a posting directly from Word.
Second Method
- Within the WebCT course, click on the Discussion Board icon.
- Click on the appropriate week.
- Click on the check box to the left of the View Thread icon. If you wish to print multiple threads, check those appropriate boxes.
- At the bottom-left of the Discussion Board table, click on the Compile button.
- A new window with all of the posts from the thread(s) should open.
- Go to Edit, Select All.
- Go to Edit, Copy.
- Open Microsoft Word. Go to Edit, Paste.
- Or...
- Click the Download button.
- Click the Save button.
- Save the file in an appropriate place.
- Open Microsoft Word. Go to File, Open and open the text file.
- If you wish to print, go to File, Print.
This way is more effective for archiving Discussion Board threads into Word. Plus, unlike the first method, it retains the Subject lines, as well as references the corresponding threads.
