Course Backup and Restore

Online Learning Module

Contents

OVERVIEW

A course backup can be used for archival purposes, but it may also be used to transfer content from one course to another. Because there are no connections between courses within WebCT, a personal computer must be used as the transfer mechanism between the courses. It is recommended that instructors make and store frequent backup copies of their courses on their computer, even if they do not intend to reuse the course content.

CREATE COURSE BACKUP

The first step is to create a course backup that is stored within the course-related files on the WebCT server.

  1. Login to your WebCT account and the course that you wish to backup.
  2. Ensure that the Designer Options tab is selected at the top of the page.
  3. Click on Manage Course under the Course Menu Designer Links on the left side of the page.
  4. Under the Backup Course links, click on the Create Backup link.
    1. Due to server space, there is a restriction of three backups saved per course.
    2. If you are prompted for exceeding the backup limit, the oldest backup(s) may be deleted.
  5. Enter a brief description of the backup and then click the Create button.
  6. When the Success notice appears regarding the backup, click the Continue button.

DOWNLOAD COURSE BACKUP

The course backup cannot be utilized for archival or reuse from the WebCT server. Therefore, the next step is to save the course backup to a personal computer. Please note that you cannot open the zipped folder that you create and save on your computer because it is not directly connected to WebCT.

  1. From the Backup Course section of Manage Course, click the radio button next to the course backup that you would like to save to your computer.
  2. Under the Actions menu on the right side, click on the Download button.
  3. When prompted, click on the Save button.
  4. Navigate to the destination on your computer that you wish to save to and rename or keep the default file name.
  5. Click the Save button.
  6. Click the Close button.

DELETE COURSE BACKUP

You are currently allowed to created one backup file per course. After a backup has been created and downloaded to your computer, we strongly recommend that you delete the backup from the WebCT course in order to conserve network space.

  1. From the Backup Course section of Manage Course, click the radio button next to the course backup that you would like to delete.
  2. Under the Actions menu on the right side, click on the Delete button.
  3. Click the OK button. This will now allow you to create a backup in the future.

UPLOAD COURSE BACKUP

If you wish to transfer course content from one course to another, you first need to upload the backup of the old course and save it in the course files of the new course.

  1. Login to the course that will receive the course backup.
  2. Ensure that the Designer Options tab is selected.
  3. Click on Manage Course under the Course Menu Designer Links on the left side of the page.
  4. Under the Backup Course links, click on the Upload Backup link.
  5. Click the Browse button and navigate to the location of the saved course backup folder.
  6. Select the folder and click on the Upload button.

RESTORE COURSE BACKUP

Once the course backup is uploaded to the course it must be applied or “restored” to the course before it can be accessed or modified.

  1. Select the radial button next to the backup file that was uploaded into the course.
  2. Under Options: Restore chose the appropriate level of content to be restored:
    1. Replace Users: keeps the student data from the backup course and erases the students in the current course.
    2. Update Users: merges the student data from the backup course with that of the current course.
    3. Keep Users: keeps the student data in the current course but applies the course content from the backup course - this is the option to select if you are using course content from a previous course.
    4. Reset Course: keeps all of the course content but deletes the student data from the current and backup course.
  3. Click the OK button.
  4. If the restoration is successful, you will receive a confirmation message. Click the Continue button.
