Defragmenting

Files on your computer can get fragmented and put on different sections of a disk. This makes it harder to read because the computer has to skip to the different sections, and in turn it takes longer to do things on your computer. This is when it is important to Defragment your computer.

Starting Disk Defragmenter From My Computer

  1. Open My Computer, right-click Local Disk, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now. The Disk Defragmenter opens.
  3. Click on drive C:, and then click Defragment. Disk Defragmenter will work for at least several minutes, though it may take several hours.

Starting Disk Defragmenter From the Start Menu

  1. From the Start menu, select All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
  2. Click on drive C:, and then click Defragment. Disk Defragmenter will work for at least several minutes, though it may take several hours.
