No More Dialup Service

As of May 15th, 2006 Concordia University – St. Paul dial up connection will no longer be available to faculty, staff, and students. The Information and Technology department is appreciative of all who were patient in using this service over the years. The dialup service is being terminated because it is an aging technology that is no longer cost effective for the university to support and maintain. The Information and Technology Department is making this decision well in advance of the termination date in an effort to give all Concordia faculty, staff, and students an opportunity to look at their connection options.

Q: So what should I use now?

A: Concordia does not recommend any dial-in or broadband company. We believe they should search the local phone book or Google for a local provider who can give you a price quote for service. Prices for dial-in service have decreased quite a bit in the last few years.

Q: Will Concordia support me if I go with this other company?

A: Our department will support your computer up to the modem port. You can bring your computer to the Help Desk and we can test to ensure your modem works for dialing a phone number, if it works, everything should be in place for your ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection to work. Any problems pertaining to the individual provider should be handled with their Customer Support.

Q: Why?

A: Dial-up is an aging technology that does not utilize the current technology to its full potential. Many websites, email, etc., truly require a technology that is faster than dialup.

The current dial-up hardware we have on campus is not a reliable piece of hardware. The hardware piece was made by a company by the name of Xyplex. Over the last few years, whenever we have called for support from Xyplex on troubleshooting an issue with dial-up, we have been told that it is a product that is no longer supported by the company.

The infrastructure that goes into dialup is not a cost effective use of the technology dollars at Concordia. We are reallocating those infrastructure resources for new technology products over the next year.
