What is an ethernet cord?
An ethernet cord is the phone-like cord that gets plugged into the left side of computers and phones and into the network port on the wall. Ethernet and wireless are both options for connecting to the internet and the Concordia, St. Paul network.
What is an ethernet port?
An ethernet port is a plug in on the wall. This is where you connect the ethernet cord into for internet connection. There are two ports side by side on the wall. One of these is a phone port and one is an ethernet port. The phone port has a picture of a phone on it and the ethernet port has a picture of a computer on it. Here are some pictures of typical ethernet/phone ports. The ethernet ports are circled with red.
To use
Plug the ethernet cord into the ethernet port and into the computer. You should be connected. The phones operate through ethernet as well, so they will need to be plugged in first. There is an additional port on the back of the phones that can be used to connect computers to the internet as well.
Problems
If your port is not working
If you think your ethernet port in your room is not working you will want to try a number of things.
- Check if the lights on the left side of the computer are blinking. If they are blinking than there is a connection.
- If the lights are not blinking, make sure you are plugging into the ethernet port and not the phone port. The ethernet port has a picture of a computer on it.
- If that does not work, try both ports.
- Next, try different cords and have a friend try to plug in using their computer.
- If another ethernet cord works, you probably need a new cord.
- If another person is able to connect, bring in your computer into the Help Desk.
