To Use

To use the jump drive simply plug it into the USB port of the machine. There might be more then one USB port. In that case, it does not matter which port it enters into.

Jump Drive

A "jump drive" is the term used to describe a portable memory disk. It is a small device (about the size of your index finger) that connects to a computer's USB port and often is capable of storing 256MBs, 1GBs, or more of data. Jump drives are used by users who need an easy, fast, and small way to transfer or store information from their computer. This is a picture of a typical jump drive.

Backing Up to a Jump Drive

The drive inserts into your USB port. This is the small rectangular input located on any side of your computer. When it is inserted, a menu will most likely pop up. If it does not, you can access it through My Computer. It may show up as a "removable disk," or will have the jump drive's product name followed by "(E:)". Double click on this, and it will open the drive's menu where you can see what is on the disk. To put files onto it, you can drag them to this menu, or, you can save them to the removable disk.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes a computer has a network drive enabled on their computer set to E:, and this may interfere with jump drives. If you are trying to use an older jump drive and it doesn't seem to work, you can right-click on the E: drive, go to Properties, and change the drive letter. However, most newer jump drives shouldn't have this problem because they will just pick up an unused drive letter.
