FolderTweaks

There are several things you can do to folders on your computer.

Contents

Permissions

You can change the permissions on the folder making that folder viewable only to certain people. To do this, right click on the folder and click Properties then go to the Security tab.

Sharing

You can also make your folder viewable to people on a shared network. To do this, right click on the folder and click Properties then go to the Sharing tab.

Hidden

A hidden folder is not as easy to find on your hard drive. It excludes it from standard searches and a casual scan of hard drive contents does not list the folder. It is important to note that the folder is still visible on your hard drive to a trained professional. In order to make a folder hidden, please follow these steps:

  1. Right click on the folder you wish to "hide".
  2. Click Properties
  3. Now check the box Hidden.
  4. The folder should now appear as hidden.

Compressing

Compressing a folder is a very dangerous thing to do as if your computer ever fails, recovering data from a compressed folder is very difficult. The I.T. Department does not recommend compressing folders for this reason. That being said compressing a folder may save space on your hard drive. In order to enable folder compression:

  1. Right click on the folder and click Properties
  2. Now click Advanced...
  3. Check the box that says Compress contents to save disk space
  4. Now select apply and OK.
  5. The contents of this folder are now compressed.
