Correct Spelling of Words for Documentation (Naming Conventions)
The style to use for documentation should be APA. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association states that the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary is the standard spelling reference. The first spelling in the Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary should be the preferred choice of spelling, if applicable.
Note: words that begin with capital letters below are proper nouns and should be treated as such.
- adware
- Bear Path (not BearPath)
- breadcrumbs
- browser
- chat room (not Chat room or chatroom)
- coworker
- database
- Department as in IT Department
- desktop
- Discussion Boards (as opposed to the previously used WebCT Bulletin Board terminology)
- DOI
- download
- e-journal
- Ethernet
- firewall
- FTP
- Help Desk (not help desk or Helpdesk)
- homepage (unless referring to a title, i.e. Help Desk Homepage)
- Information & Technology Department
- Internet as in “the Internet.”
- Internet Explorer
- laptop
- LISTSERV (tm) -- the generic term is electronic mailing list. LISTSERV is a trademarked, proprietary term; unless you know that is what is being used, you should use "electronic mailing list" rather than the, admittedly, more commonly used "list server."
- myWebCT as in, “After logging into WebCT, the myWebCT page appears.”
- online
- pop-up; pop-ups
- SGML
- Spyware
- taskbar
- Tech Shop
- toolbar
- URL
- username
- Web as in “the Web,” not, “I have a web page.”
- WebCT
- webDAV
- website
