Google Apps FAQs
What is my email address for Google Apps? Does it end with "@gmail.com"?
All students will still have an email address that ends in "@csp.edu". Email usernames are usually the first 7 letters of a student's last name plus their first initial of their first name.
How long do I get to keep this account?
This email account will never expire. Students can use this account for as long as they desire after graduating or leaving Concordia.

Does Google automatically filter spam e-mail?
Google provides a Spam mailbox directly inside the same interface as your Inbox allowing you to look at messages that were caught as spam and declare them to be "Not spam" or delete them permanently. Google uses very sophisticated spam filters to detect spam and weed out unwanted mail. The spam reporting options that they provide help to continually improve spam detection as you use the system.
Can I add a personalized signature to my e-mail?
How do I make a distribution list?
Can I work off line?
Some students will probably choose to manage all mail through the web interface all the time. Students can choose to manage their Google Apps accounts through another mail client if they desire. (Note: The Concordia University Help Desk does not support other mail clients.) Google provides instructions for using a number of mail clients. Please go to Google's Configure E-mail Client List to test out a client that you might like to use.
An alternative method for viewing your Google Apps email off line would be to download and install Google Desktop. There will be an add-on feature for the tool bar that you will have to download also in order to view your e-mails.
Can I add "Flags" to messages or change the importance of an e-mail?
Google Apps provides a "Star" feature. Starring your mail is similar to putting a little red flag on it in Outlook. In a way, it's just another label, but one that comes with an icon.
What is the size of my Google mailbox?
The size of Google mailboxes is over 4.7GB (4764MB and growing). This is over 19 times larger than the existing faculty/staff mailboxes at Concordia!
Does Google Use Industry Standards for Calendar and Email?
Currently Google's calendar and e-mail features support open industry standards including iCalendar. All Google calendars can be exported and/or subscribe to by any client or service which also follows such standards.
How can I organize my mail? Are there folders?
The online web interface provided Google allows for a different system for organizing e-mail called "Labels". Multiple labels can be applied to any e-mail or group of e-mail messages allowing for greater sorting ability than folders. Should you choose to use an e-mail client, you will be able to use folders in that client to sort your messages.
Labels Versus Folders
Labels allow for the creation of three dimensional file systems. Each item is free to exist in as many location/labels as possible. The limitations of folders versus labels becomes clear when applying it to a real life object.
Example
If you have a document on an orange tree you could file it in the folder "citrus." You would have to remember when you approach your folder system that in order to find the orange tree document, it is under citrus.
Labels allow for a more dynamic system. You could take the document on an orange tree and label it as "citrus" "tree" "fruit" "round" "Florida" and "plant." This way you will always find the exact copy regardless of which label you placed the item in. Had you wanted to do this same task under a folder based system, you would need to duplicate the document and place it in each folder.
This creates for a much more efficient system.
Archiving
If you are getting overwhelmed with so many emails in your inbox, don't delete them, archive them! Simply select the email, and click archive, archived emails are found when you click on the All Mail. Why archive? So you can keep a record of all emails ever received!
